Talk Prep Guide
Prepare and teach by the Spirit:
"And the Spirit shall be given unto you by the prayer of faith..."
Ask God to enlighten your mind so you can understand what you are to speak about and how best to present the information.
Prayerfully Prepare
-
Share a doctrine or principle related to your topic.
-
Use scriptures to teach about the doctrine (see D&C 42:12; 52:9), and relate how they are important to the congregation.
-
Briefly tell faith-promoting experiences - especially ones from your own life.
-
Bear a pure testimony of the topic, Heavenly Father, the Savior, and/or His Church.
-
1st Speaker 9:30am - 9:40am
-
2nd Speaker 9:45am - 9:55am
-
Please be courteous to the other speaker(s) by not exceeding the allotted time of 10 mins. If you are the concluding speaker please end your remarks by 9:55am.
Use Good Microphone Technique
Using the microphone properly is important for you to be heard and understood not only in the chapel but for the Zoom broadcast as well. Even if your voice carries well, the sound of your voice can be absorbed by the pews as well as the people seated in them! This can result in your voice only making it to the first few rows. Also, people seated in overflow areas outside of the chapel won't be able to hear you.
To use good microphone technique:
-
Make sure the microphone is pointed at your chin, not your mouth.
This prevents breath sounds, like "popping Ps".
-
Speak clearly and keep your volume at a conversational level.
-
Avoid using chewing gum, hard candy or lozenges before your talk
This can cause dry mouth or require you to need to clear your throat.
-
Be hydrated, and be relaxed - you're among friends!
Additional Recommendations:
-
Speak from the heart. President Gordon B. Hinckley taught, "We must ... speak out of [our] hearts rather than out of [our] books." Please avoid reading large portions of talks from General Authorities. Instead, select a few short quotes and thoughtfully share how they relate to your topic.
-
Avoid matters of a controversial nature.
-
Find opportunities to bear testimony of the Savior and His Atonement.
-
When referencing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints please refrain from using the terms, 'Mormon Church' or 'LDS Church.' Instead, please use the accepted names such as the Church's full name, the 'Church of Jesus Christ', or the 'Restored Church of Jesus Christ'.
Thank you for accepting the assignment to speak. We are confident that as you prayerfully prepare your talk, those in the audience will feel the Spirit and have a desire to draw closer to Christ. We look forward to being uplifted by your remarks!
